Providence Hill Climb Challenge ~ October 3, 2010

Summer is over. School's in. The colleges throughout our beautiful state are bustling and you're back to work.  Time to start storing nuts in preparation for a hard winter ahead? 

Not quite! 

Time, instead, to stay toned just a bit longer before the cold and dark of winter seals us up until March. 

Time for the Inaugural Providence Hill Climb Challenge!

It's just over 1,000 feet long and only 63 feet up, but Providence's Capitol Hill will generate miles of smiles as bicyclists young to old, novice to expert climb it to raise money so U.S. Open Cycling can continue to help people - and the environment - be healthier.  Our mission is to reduce overweight and obesity by helping people integrate bicycling for fitness, fun and transportation into their daily lives.

One solution to America's weight, environment and oil dependence problems is, simply, the bicycle.  But it takes you to pedal it!  We have designed the Providence Hill Climb to be challenging - not daunting - to everyone with a bicycle and a heartbeat.

So please join us, and put your mettle to the pedal, on October 3rd between 11:30 and 3:00pm at the corner of Canal and Smith Streets in Providence. 

Parking is free along Canal and Main Streets on Sunday. The US Open Cycling website has registration and other info. Sign-in will be at the Roger Williams National Memorial opposite the start line.

It's a friendly social gathering over good food and good art to benefit farm-to-school and farm-to-hospital initiatives at Farm Fresh Rhode Island.

Join us for local food, drink, and art. Catered by Raw Dogs Catering, featuring local artists, wine, beer, a silent auction and raffle. $20 online or at the door. All proceeds go to the Farm Fresh RI Market Mobile warehouse build out to get more fresh foods into local schools and hospitals.

Rhode Island Premier of "Food, Inc" to benefit RICAPE

The Jane Pickens Theater in Newport and the Rhode Island Center for Agriculture Promotion & Education(RICAPE) will host "Food Inc," this summer's most talked about picture about the food industry and our world, July 22nd, during "Rhode Island Premier Week" of the film.

The event will benefit RICAPE in support of its work on behalf of farms and farmers in Rhode Island and southern New England. To read more about RICAPE visit New England FarmWays

Stu Nunnery, RICAPE Director says the film might provide one of those teachable moments when "we get to look at something we thought we knew well only to discover that we do not. And then, how do we respond? Decisions are made every day by others about the food we eat. What role do we play in those decisions?"

Please come to the Opening Reception on Friday, Oct. 10, 5-7pm. The exhibit on the second floor of City Hall is open until Nov. 28, Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30. 

The work is for sale, ranging from $100 to $1,500, with a large painting priced at $6,000. Sales will be arranged through the artists individually, many of whom have agreed to donate a percentage of their sale price to Friends of India Point Park. Also for sale to benefit FIPP will be a print of a black and white photograph taken in the 1940s of young boys perched on India Point pilings.

   The show of work inspired by the Park includes the mediums of oil, watercolors, acrylic, pastel, photographs, fabric, collage, and poetry. Depictions of Park scenes and the city skyline range in style from realistic to impressionistic to highly imaginative, and in size from 10"x 12" to 6ft.x 8ft.Artists in the non-juried show include amateurs and well-known professionals who exhibit at galleries in New York, Providence, and elsewhere in New England.

The show has been organized by the FIPP Arts Committee chaired byIda Schmulowitz, who has painted in the Park for 20 years, usually early in the morning on large canvasses. Artists in the show are Jane Bassman, Jill Brody, Johan Bjurman, Bryan Bzdula, Steven Brownell, Alice Cooper, Mark Freedman, Peter Geisser, Sarah Gleason, Timothy Heibert, Kate Huntington, John Irwin, Dave Kendrick, Joseph "Bud" Latham, Deane Lawrence, Sam Marshall, Claudia Middendor, Regina Partridge, Alberto Pereira, Ann Pellicano, Ursala Rickenberg, John Riede, Mimo Gordon Riley, Beverly Rosen, Ann Rozhon, Ida Schmulowitz, Monica Shinn, Gretchen Dow Simpson, Karen Usas, Kathy Weber, and Gayle White.
