Why: Inspire urban design that promotes community food security
 
Southside Community Land Trust invites the public to attend the official opening of Carrot City: Designing for Urban Agriculture, a traveling exhibit showcasing innovative architectural and horticultural projects that enable the production of food in urban areas across the U.S. and Canada, at 5:00 p.m. this Friday. The event is free and is the first in a lineup of events planned for 2011 to celebrate Southside Community Land Trust’s 30th year of helping people grow food in Providence.
 
Last shown at Parsons/The New School for Design, the Providence installation of Carrot City will incorporate local projects, such as the fruit and nut orchard planted in Providence’s Locust Grove Cemetery and various urban agriculture installations planned by the New Urban Farmers in Pawtucket/Central Falls. At 6:00 p.m., two of the exhibit’s curators—faculty members in Architectural Science and Food Security at Ryerson University in Toronto—will give a talk on strategies for city planning, building design, and landscaping that can nourish local food systems.
 
In addition to the opening ceremony, the exhibit will run through March 10th and be open for viewing at the following times:

RI Rose Society Garden Maintenance and Photography Workshop ~ August 14, 2010

Do you want to get the most out of your Point and Shoot camera and perhaps win a place in the RIRS Photography Calendar Contest or the ARS Photo contest?  Perhaps, you just want to document your own garden and have a true representation in photos of its beauty.

Come to the meeting this Saturday for hands-on expert advice from professional photographer and Rosarian, Dave Candler. Dave will cover it all from the practical to hands-on advanced creative photography.

FIRST we will spruce up the garden under the leadership of the Garden Chair, Andy Vanable.

Please bring your cameras, manuals, tripods,  photo equipment, and, of course, your pruners, rakes, shovels, insect repellent. See you Saturday with your cameras.

URI's Learning Landscape Program

Travel from the tropics, to the desert to a rainforest this February vacation!  Kids have the chance to feel a coyote's fur, learn how to compost with red wiggler worms, examine a robin's nest, feed a venus fly trap and much more in our specially guided field trips. Each child will plant seeds in their own greenhouse, bring them home and watch them grow! This environmental science program is open to children 5 - 12 years old accompanied by their adult chaperones. The cost is $5.00 per person (cash or check accepted). Children's Botanical Illustration Class
10:00 am -11:30 am

Let your child's creative side shine! Artist and teacher, Victoria Carlton, will show your child the skills they need to craft their very own masterpiece in the stype of Georgia O'Keefe.  Inspiration will be provided by the lush, exotic atmosphere and colorful flowers and foliage of Roger Williams Park Botanical Center.  Each day will feature a different artist media such as watercolors (Tuesday) or pastels (Thursday or Friday).

• The fee is $6.00 per child, per session - all materials are included
• Children MUST BE chaperoned by a parent or guardian AT ALL TIMES during classes.

Calling all supporters of clean water, safe parks, and happy and productive young people: We need your help collecting aluminum cans! River Rangers are working with local sculptor, Chris Kane to construct construct two large fish with scales made of recycled soda cans, to be mounted on the river side of the fish ladder at Riverside Park. We need more scales!
