Thanksgiving Day should be just that for everyone, yet many of our neighbors are struggling to make ends meet. Rhode Islanders are generous, though, and especially at the holidays. So here are some opportunities to have fun and pitch in.
Several events are listed on the Food Bank's website that are free if you bring donations of non-perishable food. These include the Trot Off Your Turkey 5K in Barrington on Saturday, and Holiday Classics films shown at the Showcase Cinemas in Warwick November 27 - December 18.
Then there's the new Downtown Jingle 5K to benefit the Food Bank on Sunday, December 5th, and the Silent Art Auction to benefit the Food Bank on Friday, December 10th. Bill Harley & Friends are giving two benefit concerts at The Lincoln School on December 11th. Dave's Marketplace is collecting food on December 18th.There will no doubt be many more collection points around the state during the next month.
Oh, yes. Monetary donations are always good.
The need will go on beyond the holidays, though. Check out the Food Bank's website to find ways to help. More and more groups are growing food during the warm seasons to donate to the Food Bank. There's a list of kid's activities that help the Food Bank. "Advocate for Change" page and write the governor-elect and your representatives. If you have business savvy and are entrepreneurially inclined, why don't you figure out ways to employ your Rhode Island neighbors and start a local trend toward less need for food banks!
