From Southside Community Land Trust
The Chicken Ordinance has passed out of the Ordinance Committee, and will be voted on by the full City Council twice: on THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 2nd and THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th at 5:30 in the Council Chambers. We need a majority vote at both City Council meetings to pass the ordinance and legalize chicken keeping in the city!
To make this happen, we need you to call your city council representative before these council meetings to make sure they vote in favor of city chickens! We also need you to attend the city council meetings, wear a chicken sticker, and let the council know: WE WANT URBAN CHICKENS!
How, you ask?
1) First, make sure you know who your City Council representative is. Click here, enter your address, and then call the number listed on your City Council reps page.
2) Next, say something like this: “Hi, my name is ________ and I live at __(address)___ in your ward. I urge you to support the chicken ordinance coming before the full council on September 2nd and September 16th. Chickens are easy to care for and do well in city backyards, producing eggs, eating bugs and garden pests, and improving the health of soil." A chicken fact sheet is attached, so by all means, please personalize your call by emphasizing what is important to you!
3) Lastly, bring your family, friends, and self to the City Council meetings! We need a huge presence at the meetings to demonstrate there is a diverse base of support for backyard chickens in Providence. We had a great turnout for the ordinance committee meeting, and we need twice as many supporters to attend the full council meetings. Come join us and show your support!
Please pass this email along and encourage your friends and family to call their council representatives as well--we need a concentrated effort in the next two weeks.
