Tonight's event at Providence College will give Rhode Islanders the chance to hear candidates discuss the state’s most pressing environmental issuesl
Sept. 28, 2010 — The Environment Council of Rhode Island (ECRI) will host a gubernatorial candidates debate on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 7:00 P.M. in ’64 Hall in the Slavin Center at Providence College. The event titled “What’s Next For Rhode Island’s Environment?” will be free and open to the public, but seating is limited so registration will be required by calling (401) 621-8048, e-mailing [email protected] or registering at the ECRI website at www.environmentcouncilri.org. The debate is co-sponsored by the Providence College Political Science Department and the Board of Programmers.
The debate takes place two weeks after Rhode Islanders voted in the primaries, and will be limited to the candidates who won their party’s nomination or poll 5% or higher in any one non-partisan, non-candidate poll after July 1, 2010. Frank Caprio, Lincoln Chafee, and John Robitaille and Ken Block have confirmed that they will attend the debate. If another candidate polls at 5% or higher before the debate they will also be allowed to participate.
The debate will be moderated by Judith Swift, who is the director of the Coastal Institute at the University of Rhode Island. Professor Swift joined URI in 1972. She holds a joint appointment as Professor in Communication Studies and Theatre and has served as the vice provost for academic affairs at URI. Swift has written or developed scripts for films and videos, which have aired on several PBS affiliates, and has constructed, authored or co-authored more than 40 productions based on historical events or science.
The questions will be posed to the candidates by five panelists, three of which represent groups that are ECRI members: ECRI President Tricia K. Jedele of the Conservation Law Foundation, Save The Bay’s Jonathan Stone, and ECRI individual member David Brunetti. Jen Pereira of the Rhode Island Foundation and Lauren Swindler, a student at Providence College, round out the panel.
The Environment Council of Rhode Island is a coalition of more than 60 organizations and individuals whose mission is to serve as an effective voice for developing and advocating policies and laws that protect and enhance the environment.
