DEM ANNOUNCES OPENING OF INDOOR WINTER FARMERS’ MARKETS IN NORTH KINGSTOWN AND SOUTH KINGSTOWN
Both Markets, Which will Feature a Large Variety of Local Products, Are Set to Open on Saturday, November 21

PROVIDENCE – Starting this Saturday, November 21, shoppers in South County will have two new winter farmers’ markets available where they can purchase a wide variety of locally grown and produced products.The Wintertime Coastal Growers Market will open at Lafayette Mill on Route 102, just west of Wickford in North Kingstown. The South Kingstown Indoor Winter Farmers’ Market will open at the Peacedale Mill Complex, located at 1425 Kingstown Road (Route 108) in Peacedale. Both markets will be open this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thereafter, the North Kingstown Coastal Growers market will be open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the South Kingstown market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Department of Environmental Management’s Division of Agriculture and the USDA/Rural Development Council are helping to sponsor the new indoor farmers’ markets through the “Get Fresh. Buy Local.” statewide campaign aimed at promoting awareness of and interest in buying RI-grown specialty crops.
NORTH KINGSTOWN:
The Wintertime Coastal Growers Market at Lafayette Mill in North Kingstown will open Saturday with its celebrated Thanksgiving Market. Throughout the summer and fall, the Coastal Growers Market operates on Saturdays at Casey Farm in Saunderstown. Many of the long-term growers who participate in the farmers’ market at Casey Farm will take part in the winter market in North Kingstown including Barden Family Orchard, Besto Pesto, Bravo Wood Fired Pizza, Casey Farm, Conanicut Island Grass Fed Beef, Custom House Coffee, Farmstead Cheese, Ledge Ends Produce, Matunuck Oyster Farm, Narragansett Creamery, Olga’s Cup and Saucer, Pat’s Pastured, Robin Hollow Farm, The Reynolds Barn, Seven Stars Bakery, Susanna’s Ices, Willywaw and Zephyr Farm.
Shoppers will be able to purchase a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, cheeses, naturally raised meats, breads and baked goods, fresh eggs, preserves, honey, maple syrup, local seafood, ice creams, flowers, wreaths, soaps, coffee and handmade pizza for lunch.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN:
The new South Kingstown indoor winter market is an outgrowth of the South Kingstown farmers’ market, Rhode Island’s oldest and longest continuously operating farmers’ market that operates at URI’s East Farm and at Marina Park from May through October. This indoor winter market will feature a cornucopia of locally grown and produced products, including:
- Apples, cranberries, and seasonal vegetables such as butternut squash, turnips, potatoes, onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, brussel sprouts, parsnips, and tomatoes;
- Farm fresh turkeys, USDA certified grass fed beef, and Fortuna’s sausage;
- Matunuck oysters, steamers, little necks, and fresh fish when available;
- Pastas and sauces, farm fresh eggs, pastries, pies, breads, honey, jams and jellies, and the famous Johnnycakes and meal from Carpenter’s Grist Mill;
- RI wool blankets and yarn, artisan soaps, Christmas trees, wreaths and arrangements
