VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SEPTEMBER 22-25TH!
WHAT: Come help The Nature Conservancy, Save The Bay, the Salt Ponds
Coalition, and RIDEM enhance critical marine habitat in Quonochontaug
Pond, Westerly. We need volunteers to help us harvest and transplant
eelgrass. This is a joint restoration project, funded by a NOAA/TNC
Community Restoration Partnership Grant. The eelgrass transplant will
benefit fish and shellfish alike.
WHEN:
HARVEST: Harvest date is Monday, Sept. 22nd (Rain date will be Tuesday,
Sept. 23rd.) All volunteers will work from 9 am to 3 pm. Lunch, snacks
and drinks will be provided.
Harvest location: Fort Getty
SORTERS: Sorters separate sediment from eelgrass, count shoots and sort
eelgrass into bundles for transplant. If you can't do the full day,
please let us know!
KAYAKERS: We need 1-2 kayakers. Please bring your own kayak and life
vest. Kayakers take bags of eelgrass from the divers and transport them
to shore. Must be able to lift 30 pounds out of the water and in to the
kayak.
TRANSPLANT: Transplant date is Tuesday, Sept. 23rd (Lightening date will
be Wednesday, Sept. 24th). All volunteers need to arrive by 9 am. This
is a full day commitment for volunteers. Lunch, snacks, and drinks will
be provided.
Transplant location: Meet at Weekapaug Yacht Club
DIVERS: Divers help transplant eelgrass into Quonochontaug Pond by
inserting the shoots into the sediment. A full day commitment is
necessary.
IN WATER DIVER SUPPORT & KAYAKERS: In water support volunteers hand
eelgrass and bamboo skewers to the divers. The kayakers transports
equipment from the Save The Bay boat to the divers and diver support.
* All divers must be SCUBA-certified, over 18, and have been actively
diving the past year. Volunteer divers must have all of their own gear
and preferably a tank.
** Individuals 16 years of age or less who do not drive themselves to
the project must come accompanied with a parent or guardian who will be
there the entire time.
