Several workshops, movies, discussions, and celebrations will bring attention to the institutions and people who help us learn about Rhode Island's animals, plants, and ecosystems: what's out there, what it does, and how it's doing. Natural History Week is organized by the Rhode Island Natural History Survey and recognized by a governor's proclamation!
Thanks to Biomes Marine Biology Center, Roger Williams Park Zoo, the Museum of Natural History & Planetarium at Roger Williams Park, and Audubon Society of RI for the special events planned to celebrate RI Natural History Week. Click here for a complete list of offerings!
What is "natural history"? An excerpt from the RI Natural History Week announcement:
"Natural history is a discipline, practiced since classical times, through which we learn about animals, plants, ecological communities, and geological systems. It emphasizes observation and comparison of living organisms and natural habitats. It also emphasizes that you don't need to go to the ends of the earth or be the world's greatest expert to learn valuable lessons, anyone can do it"
