For those of us who live in Providence and wonder when our streets will be swept, here is the link to the current street sweeping schedule. We can sweep/rake debris into the street before those machines, which seem like invasions from Mars in the middle of the night, come around our neighborhoods. Ward 3 began June 8. Some areas should already have been swept. Gardens always look so much better after the sidewalks and streets have been cleaned up. I've got to get out there and sweep a bit myself.
The Providence city website has quite a lot of info posted that interests the Providential Gardener. For instance, did you know that on the Public Works Department's FAQ there is an answer to the question: "How do I know my yard is up to city standards?" This won't set well with some folks who balk at anybody telling them what to do, but if you see it from the perspective of just being a good neighbor and doing unto others.... , most of us can accept it. Rats are not fun to have in your neighborhood, and they're the real reason "city standards" originate. This is the answer to the city standards Q:
"All residents are expected to keep their property up to city standards. Yards are to be kept clean and tidy at all times. Residents are responsible for the proper disposal of yard debris such as tree limbs, branches, and leaves. Grass is to be kept neat and cut. Broken glass, animal droppings, and all other hazardous materials are to be cleaned up and disposed of properly. Construction materials such as paint cans, sheet rock, and other materials used in home remodeling are to be disposed of in a proper manner. Every resident has the right to a clean and healthy neighborhood and all residents are responsible in keeping the city clean.
