Check Out the Providential Gardener Calendar for Upcoming Events!
GREEN DRINKS! Remember to bring some business cards when you drop by "Green Drinks" this Thursday to meet other Rhode Islanders who care about things green. Bill Mott sends word that this month, Green Drinks is at The Hub, a bike shop at 181 Brooke Street, Providence, from 5 to 8 pm. Friday morning is "Bike to Work Day," so The Hub fits right in with the group's environmental interests. I have met a lot of interesting folks there, both employed by environmental groups such as Natural News, Rhode Island Audubon Society, and The Ocean Project, and individuals who just want to meet other Rhode Islanders who care about our natural environment, so I heartily recommend dropping by. It's free. Bill says there is interest throughout the state, and he believes there will be at least one meeting this summer in South County or maybe near Newport for folks who live in those parts.
PLANT SALES! There are any number of plant sales again this weekend. Note especially Southside Community Land Trust's sale on Saturday and Sunday, corner of Dudley and West Clifford Streets, Providence, 10 am to 2 pm.
SOIL TESTING! Why is this so difficult? Go out into the yard before it rains today with a little plastic spoon and a couple of baggies and a permanent marker. Dish some dirt into the baggies, label the baggies and take them to the Cumberland Monastery Saturday, May 19 by noon, so the Master Gardeners can tell you what the pH of your soil is. If your soil is too acidic, that may explain why your plants don't grow so well. I don't know why I resist doing this. It's not hard. More in the next post.
