The Wyckoff Farm in East Flatbush,Brooklyn, NY, must be one of the oldest urban gardens in the United States. Pieter Claesen Wyckoff started farming this site in 1652, and his descendants managed to save the house and some land around it from development a few decades ago. The original house still stands and is the oldest structure in New York City. Some land around it continues to be farmed. In fact, the Wyckoff Farm now has a Community Demonstration Garden, a weekly farmers market, a youth internship program, and garden workshop series. A museum is open Tuesday - Sunday, 10 am - 4 pm. This site is interesting to the Providential Gardener because it is intended to be "a dynamic community center for sustainable living," and also because the gardener/caretaker, is a former Providence resident and graduate of Classical High School.
