This morning, about ten people followed an arborist up Blackstone Boulevard as he explained and demonstrated when and how best to prune trees. The group took out a lot of dead wood, found some insect damage and discussed what to do, removed a girdling root that was strangling a tree, and learned about "codominant stems." The helpers also got expert advice on the tools to use and learned the names of the trees they cared for. Volunteering for projects like this not only helps maintain public spaces better, but also it is a great way to learn how to care for the trees on your own property.
